FEBRUARY'S CAMPOUT 2002
|
|
| Where | Between Coldsprings & Cleveland TX off of FM2025 |
| When | Feb. 15-17, 2002 |
| Campout Title | Lone Star Trail Hike/Campout |
| Leaders | SM Chris, ASM Buddy, CC Steve |
| Weather | EXCELLENT! high in upper 60's/70's - Low in the 30's/40's |
| Scouts in Attendance | Jeremy, Andrew, Preston, Tyrel, Mickey |
| Pictures | |
| Camp Log | Day 1 - Arrived at 7:30pm
and setup camp. A tad chilly. Scouts turned in early
(by their own choice). Day 2 - Breakfast and some free time. 9:30am, we headed out on the Lone Star Trail. Lunch at 12:30pm. Just past half way, boys start getting tired. Asking if they are close. Jeremy starts to get delirious and starts singing a song that he is making up as we hike. Scouts hiking pace increase to get away from Jeremy. We are now walking a good pace. You can hear Jeremy about 100 yards away. Scouts are either way in front of him, or way behind him. Arrived at Double Lakes (around 15 miles) at 4:40pm. Jeremy then stops singing this song from 2 1/2 hours ago. Arrived at camp and taught camp fire setup and then campfire cooking. Scouts had steak and chicken, potatoes and beans. Ahh.. the great out doors! Scouts started turning in at 9:30. Before most turned in, we gave Jeremy the Scout Spirit award for keeping the scouts from asking "How much further" and instead making them walk faster. Final campfire call was at 11pm. Then the water brigade came in. Day 3 - Scouts a bit sluggish to get out of tents. Could be the cold, could be the results of the 15 mile hike. Finally, breakfast was served. Scouts had KP and some free time. Broke down the campsite and left at 12:30pm. General notes: Great campout, excellent trail. We will go back. |

MARCH'S
CAMPOUT 2002
|
|
| Where | Galveston |
| When | March 22-24th, 2002 |
| Campout Title | Galveston Camping Trip |
| Leaders | ASM Buddy, ASM Brad, CC Steve |
| Weather | Windy but nice |
| Scouts in Attendance | Tyrel, Andrew, Preston, Jeremy, Evan, Don, Shawn, AJ |
| Pictures | Galveston - March 2002 |
| Camp Log | Day 1 - Arrived to the Park
at 8:30pm. The new speed limit and a major accident on the
freeway added a lot of time. Campsites were setup quickly
and gear stowed. No problems. Day 2 - No need for the 6:30am wake up call. The sun shines in the tents around 6:00. Scouts were up before the leaders for once. After breakfast, we took a hike through the marshlands. Returned to camp. After lunch, there was a little fishing done on the beach. With nothing biting, the scouts decided to engineer a water breaker wall during their free time. After the beach time, we headed over to the Amphitheater were there is a water pond with salt water blue crab and bass in the same pond. When Galveston floods, the salt water stays on the bottom. The rain run off provides the fresh water. The Bass were jumping out of the water, but unfortunately, not on our hooks. We tried to do a little crabbing, but that had the same results. Back to camp we go for dinner. As we arrive back to the camping area, I noticed that the wind picked up. Tents on other campsites were just about to take off. Their tent stakes were not done properly. I began to wonder about our tents. As we arrived in our area, our tents were perfect *phew* and our Troop and American Flag were waiving proudly in the air. Ahhh.. a great day to be a scout! After getting a fire started, the scouts grabbed their food and cooked over an open fire. Scouts love to cook over an open fire. And believe it or not, the food is pretty good! Of course, the secret to all outdoor cooking is Tony Chachere's. (Helps to cover up the burnt taste) Day 3 - WE SURVIVED! After breakfast, the scouts were a bit slow going. They knew we were going to the Bolivar Ferry at 11am, so we mentioned that if the campsite was not all packed up by 11am, we would do community service instead. Amazing what a few constructive, well placed words can do. We were done at 10:55am and had Sunday Service before we departed. At the Ferry, we parked the vehicles and jumped on board. After the Ferry ride, we had lunch and departed. Over all, the camping trip was fun. Not a lot to do at Galveston State Park, but we had a great time for our first campout with 2 patrols. The new patrol did a great job! General notes: Suzanne reserved the campsites. We asked for sunny skies, and a beautiful view. If it does not meet our specifications, blame Suzanne. |

District Camporee - April 2002 |
| Camp Log | Day 1 - Arrived to campsite
to see the contents of our trailer on the ground.
Scoutmaster arrived early and decided to mark out territory with
the gear. Good thing Scouts are Trustworthy! Campsite
went up slowly. Think the massive tower being built by
another Troop took the fun out of setting up our tents. The
night was pretty nice. Good breeze. Brad and Buddy
stayed up late to keep an eye on the moon and to make sure it
didn't go anywhere. Brad decided it was best to give the
other leaders a chance to fall a sleep before he turned in.
What a nice guy! Day 2 - Scouts cooked breakfast, cleaned up for 12 hours and then went to bed. Actually, the scouts were busy all day and the wind had picked up and brutally attacked the Scoutmaster's tent, which had to be taken down and repaired. Later that night, the Camporee Campfire (propane and steel pipe that looked like logs... sorta) went on and the Flamin Wild Cats pulled in two 3rd place awards!! Way to go Scouts. Day 3 - Packing up the campsite. Exactly why does it take so long to put things up? What can you do to motivate scouts on the last day? I know! Volunteer to do Camporee Clean up if we are the last ones to finish with our Troop site! Well, it is a noble idea now. Will have to use it on the next Camporee. General notes: Bring ear plugs for May's campout. |

| Camp Log | Day 1 - Arrived late.
Traffic bad, weather good. The Scouts that were part of the
advanced camping party, setup tents and awaited the Troop's
arrival. Day 2 - The adventures begin. Deer walked right up to the scouts to eat out of their hands. Brave deer! Scouts walked up, down, and around the rock. The Flamin Arrows climbed in and out of the rock formations and had a great time. Dinner was cooked over an open fire, Troop 87 style! If you can catch it, you can cook it! Day 3 - Troop packed up in a record 2 hours. Amazing considering we had to walk all the gear to the trailer. Scouts were treated to Dairy Queen for their extra effort. General notes: If we go back, watch out for the grumpy Park Ranger that loves his job! |

Bought 1 pint of ice cream (Leadership requirement) Day 3 - Followed scouts to their classes, begged and pleaded with scouts to not tie the instructors up. Scouts go on 5 mile hike. Bought 1 pint of ice cream. Day 4 - Scouts are now running Summer Camp. Rained a bit. Bought 1 pint of ice cream. Day 5 - Scouts go on 10 mile hike. No pint of ice cream bought. Day 6 - Scouts finish up merit badge classes and start their free time activities. Hard rain comes in around 2:30pm and continues till about 4:30pm. Scouts build a diverter dam to help funnel the running water out of our campsite that was flooding fast due to the low point of our camp. Darn campsite 8! Day 7 - We left about 9:30am in the rain and mud. Darn campsite 8! On the way home we stopped off at Luling for lunch. They moved the Watermelon Thump parade to the last weekend of the month, so we got to see the hub-bub in Luling at its best. General notes: Need to walk more to work off the pints of mandatory ice cream I had to eat. |
