JANUARY'S EVENT 2003
|
|
| Where | Lone Star Trail |
| When | January 24-26th |
| Campout Title | 20 mile hike |
| Leaders | SM Chris, ASM Buddy, ASM Brad, CC Steve |
| Weather | Cloudy, light rain on Saturday, rain cloud on Sunday had an endless supply of water for our tents. |
| Scouts in Attendance | Jeremy, Joseph, Cody, Zane, Preston, Evan, Don, Zack, Ryan |
| Camp Log | Day 1 - Friday was
nice. Cold, but nice. Day 2 - Saturday was cold too, but made for a comfortable 20 mile hike. The hike itself was not that easy. Muddy for the first 4-6 miles and the second half of the trail was long. A tornado came through the trail about 2 months prior and knocked down a ton of these huge trees. Scouts had no problem going in and out of these trees. Mr. Gilless and Mr. Sullivan earned their climbing Merit Badge that day we believe. Back at camp, the CC and SM cooked the Troop homemade stew, corn bread and a dessert. The Troop ate well! Day 3 - Woke up to rain. Got dressed while it was raining. Started packing while it was raining. Loaded while it kind of stopped raining. Drove back in the rain. Unloaded the Troop trailer in a light rain. Arrived back home and took a shower. WE LOVE WATER! |

| Camp Log | Day 1 - Advance party
arrived at the part around 5:30pm and ASPL chose the site for us
to camp. Setup went fairly well and a few scouts cooked
chili for the advanced party. Good eatin! The rest of
the Troop arrived about 8:30pm. Day 2 - After a raccoon raided one patrol ice chest that was not stored properly, the scouts decided to store the dry boxes and coolers in the trailer for the night. The day's activities were pretty light but emphasized the older scouts teaching the new scouts a few things for requirements. 1st year scouts were also engaged in skills. Later in the day, a 4 mile hike was done with just the new scouts. For dinner, the adults had scouts prepare 3 dutch oven treats. Nice thick corn bread, dessert and rolls. Believe it or not, but all 3 dishes turned out awesome! Day 3 - Scouts were told that for Sunday Breakfast, they could not have donuts unless they made them as a side dish to a regular meal. They decided to not to do that. So the adults made beignets. After the adults had breakfast, we walked through the patrol campsites with donuts in hand. After the scouts mouths started to water from looking at the yummy donuts, we invited them over 1 patrol at a time to make their own donuts. The power of persuasion ! As Lord Baden Powell said... "Scouting is a game with a purpose". |

| Camp Log | Day 1 - Left close to
6pm. 5 vehicles, 21 scouts and 6 adults started off on their
adventure. First stop was at Jack in the Box. Little
did we know what was in store at this stop. Before
departing, it was mandatory to have "bags" in certain
vehicles for motion sickness effects. Arrived at Guadalupe
State Park close to 11pm. Campsites up by 12 mid.
Weather is nice, but getting a bit cold (upper 40's) Sleep
time! One scout camped out under a blue tarp with a
cot. Day 2 - Up at 7:00pm. Breakfast, clean up and off to Enchanted Rock state park. Hike up the rock, back down (down the rock was all up hill too I think!!). Started the Geologist Merit badge. Falcon's took a 5 mike hike around the rock and the Wildcats and Arrow's did a small hike and exploring of the formations. Left the park around 5:00pm and headed back to camp. Falcons made Stew from scratch, Wildcats made sloppy Scouts (joes) and the Arrow's made Jumbalia. At the campfire, scouts had skits followed by our own OA Call out. Scouts dismissed back to their sites. Weather was cloudy all day with some breaks of sun light. Clear nights though. Got below 32 degs on Saturday night. 1 scout slept under a blue tarp with a cot. Around 3:30am, the raccoon's paid us a visit. When they realized the cooler that was out was pinned under a picnic table, they got mad and went to visit the scout sleeping under the tarp. Scout squeezed in with 2 other scouts and stayed their till morning. Day 3 - Woke up to frost on tents. Awesome day was in the making. Blue skies, warm sun, and breakfast in the making. Packing went fairly smooth. Vehicles loaded and we were off close to 11am. |

| Camp Log | Day 1 - The
day was great. The trail was a bit bumpy and proved to be
more than a novice type of trail. The outside trail had some
obstacles, hills and some great scenery. Over all it was a
nice bike trip with no injuries or damage to trees. NOTE: Get more padding for seat. |

| Camp Log | Day 1 - Arrived
around 11pm. Advanced party setup tents and had the lights
on for us! Just like at Motel 6! Scouts are excited to
be so close to the beach. Day 2 - Scouts get up and start cooking and then off to the beach. A hike around to look at the environment and then in the water they go! Later, a visit to the sand dunes proves to be a good choice. After lunch, back to the beach we go. After dinner, the adults have a few surprises. Dessert and an ambush. Who says the scouts are the only ones that have fun on campouts! While the adults chased down scouts and tried to get them wet, the scouts showed that they are resourceful and do not fear an adult with a water balloon. Day 3 - We pack up in under 2 hours and head off to see Lady Lex (U.S.S. Lexington) which is on our way home. WOW! This thing is HUGE! Scouts seemed to do a good job of covering the ship in under 2 hours. Then came the ride home. It was quiet in the car... except when certain people started to snore. *ahem* |

| Camp Log | Day 1 - Arrived.
Troop 87 who? Off to do our swim test. Ahh our
first swim *ahem*. Then off to our camp. It was just a
little ways away from the main camp. Down around the corner,
up the hill, down around the corner, up the hill, down the hill,
around the corner and then up a hill and to the right past the
road that lead to the big oil jack that sounded like a huge oscillating
fan at night. VvvvvVVvvvvvVVvvvvv Day 2 - Finding all the events seemed to be a full days activities. Scouts seem in good spirits and have started on their merit badge classes. A visit to the trading post was made. WHAT!?! No Blue Bell! Monday night a storm blew in. I think it was actually a hurricane that was created over the bay. Is that possible? All tents stayed up and the scouts stayed in. Mr. Buddy and Mr. Gilless stayed up and checked on all the tents during the night. The tents seemed to hold their ground and the scouts made it through the night. The oscillating fan could still be heard. Day 3 - Woke up to a sunny morning. Put out the items that got wet and went to breakfast. Days events continued and we returned back to camp later that night. Storm blew in. Hurricane #2. This one really huffed and puffed. But, our scouts had been prepared. They spend an hour tying down everything, resecuring the lines, adding extra lines to any other place they could. Scouts really came together and did a great job and it paid off. During a very strong winded storm, all the tents stayed standing and the scouts stayed pretty much dry. After the storm blew by, we were asked to evacuate our campsite and go to a building for a while. Wow.. what excitement. It turns out that the worst of the storm had passed and we came through it very well. Our scouts are now trained in "what to do when a bad weather strikes". The oscillating fan could still be heard. Day 4 - The sun greeted us again in the morning like nothing had happed. Seems this kind of weather is typical in this neck of the woods. We now know that when they say "chance of rain", to run for shelter! After going from one end of camp to the other end checking on scouts, it was time to visit the trading post. A slushy seemed like the right thing to have. Later that night back at camp, we say and watched the sky in fear of another storm. It was an eerie silence. Seems the oil jack/oscillating fan was off. Day 5 - The day was warm and was needed to help dry some of the mud from our campsite. Several of the leaders were out at the canoe base area watching the instructors and scouts. A few others traveled around checking on other scouts. After all the activities and there was a free time before dinner, a few scouts and 2 leaders headed to the main reason why we came to this camp. THE BLOB! It turned out to be as much fun as we thought. This also turned out to be the last opportunity for any other scouts in our Troop to get on the blob. :( But all was back to normal at our camp. The oscillating fan could once again...be heard. Day 6 - A few storm clouds blew in and drizzled some rain on us here and there. Just as the scouts were about to do an activity, a crack of lightning would occur and close down the activity. A few scouts and leaders got to get on the kayaks and have some fun. The oscillating fan could still be heard. Day 7 - Home bound! Traveling with Mr. Gilless turned out to be adventurous! We saw Fort Worth come and go and come and go till we finally found our way out of the area. Scouts were a sleep in the back seat almost the entire way home. You would think we worked them too hard at summer camp. Walking a few miles each day is not hard labor ... is it? General notes: Never go to summer camp the first week of any camp. Sid Richardson is a great camp, but there was a lot to improve on during our time there. Be Prepared has new meaning to our Troop. |
